VERB AS COMPLEMENT



A.    VERB AS COMPLEMENT
A verb complement is the arrangement of one verb as the object of another verb. This happens three ways in English:
1. With infinitives
·         I asked her to leave.
·         I wanted to leave.
·         I helped him to leave.
2. With gerunds
·         I considered leaving the job.
·         I regretted his leaving the job.
·         They decided on leaving.
3. With noun clauses
·         I insisted that she leave.
·         I wondered why they left.
·         She acknowledged that she had left the job.
B.     VERB + PREPOSITION FOLLOWED BY GERUND
The examples :
1.      The students complained about being made to wear a uniform to school.
2.      She apologised for not introducing herself sooner.
3.      We laughed about having to do such silly things.

C.    ADJECTIVE + PREPOSITION FOLLOWED BY GERUND
The examples :
1.      Addicted to : He is addicted to watching TV.
2.      Afraid of   : She is afraid of speaking in public.
3.      Tired of     : She is tired from working all day.
